Hipapatua Community Planting Day 2024
Planting with Greening Taupō at Hipapatua is becoming a community tradition. We started in 2017 when 50 people joined us to plant 1500 native plants around the amenities area and alongside the small stream that drained into the beautiful Waikato River. Greening Taupō aims for the Hipapatua Reserve is to remove the weeds, re-establish native vegetation, help bring back a healthy environment and reintroduce the community to a revitalised Hipapatua
Taupō District Council (TDC) partners with Greening Taupō and supports the restoration of Hipapatua. They have provided support by preparing planting sites and, when able, maintaining the sites. Native plants have been provided by TDC, Greening Taupō donations, and more recently, Trees that Count.
Funding from Wairakei Charitable Trust (WCT) was granted to Greening Taupō in both 2023 and 2024, enabling the continuation and expansion of the restoration work at Hipapatua. These funds supported vital land preparation and maintenance of planted sites, which has been especially appreciated. With additional funding for native plants from Trees That Count and the involvement of the wider community, Greening Taupō successfully undertook another community planting day in 2024, restoring more of the area and advancing this important project.
Aaron from Land clear did a great job clearing the site of weeds
Lots of rubbish was uncovered
Great support from TDC and the wonderful First credit union Taupō the best BBQ masters
Great turn out of volunteers
The community planting day was a great success. It was a wet spring day but that did not deter 90 people from coming along and joining in to plant.
The wonderful whanau from First Credit Union Taupō were masters on the BBQ providing a yummy sausage sizzle for all the planters and we had some new faces come along to help plant.
All plants were staked and plants on the flat were well mulched; they were well watered throughout the day. The Greening Taupō wicked weeders returned the following Tuesday to ensure that nothing was missed and all plants were staked and mulched.
